ABSTRACT
Statistical and spectral analyses of wave characteristics in the offshore region of Qingdao are
presented based on one year of continuous field observations. The intra-annual variations of significant
wave height (Hs) and wave period, together with their probabilistic distributions and spectral structures,
are systematically examined. Hs ranges from 0.11 to 2.78 m, with an annual mean of 0.51 m, exhibiting
pronounced seasonal variability. Both wave height and wave period distributions are well represented
by a two-parameter Weibull model. Spectral analysis indicates that monthly averaged wave spectra
are predominantly unimodal, with peak frequencies concentrated between 0.1 and 0.2 Hz, reflecting
wind-sea-dominated conditions. Bimodal spectra, indicative of mixed swell and wind-sea systems,
are observed in February, August, and September. Regression analysis among characteristic wave
parameters and spectral moments reveals strong correlations, while empirical ratios deviate from
classical deep-water theoretical values due to shallow-water influences and mixed sea states. During
Typhoon Bavi, wave spectra were predominantly single-peaked, and the wave field was dominated
by low-frequency swells around 0.09 Hz. These findings provide region-specific insight into the local
wave climate and offer a scientific basis for offshore engineering design and coastal hazard mitigation
in the Qingdao waters.
