In this paper, we assess the effect of ecological construction in China during 2008 to 2014.
The effect of ecological construction is divided into green economy, green society, and green
environment. A network data envelopment analysis (DEA) is employed to measure the total level
of ecological construction in China and each region. According to the results, we find that the total level
of ecological construction of China is still low. At the same time, there are also significant differences
between regions. The regions with a developed economy have better performance on ecological
construction. We also find that environmental protection is still the weak link of ecological construction
in various regions. Hence, local governments still need to develop a green economy and increase
investment on environmental protection in the future – especially on pollution control facilities.
